Some folks may think that politics has become so corrupt that miracles could never happen in this arena. I traveled to Raleigh, NC to witness the swearing-in of Justice Paul Newby to the NC Supreme Court on January 11th. Justice Newby’s ceremony began with a lighthearted reminder that “if we didn’t believe in miracles, we should try running in a statewide non-partisan race with a name like Newby”.
Having worked hard on Newby’s behalf during the campaign, I know firsthand the tremendous odds Paul Newby overcame to be re-elected for eight years to the NC Supreme Court. I talked to politicians and pollsters who were deeply troubled by Newby’s trailing in the polls throughout the election by an average of around 15 percentage points.
Newby supporters came together for prayer and waged a huge grass-roots effort in hopes of overcoming these odds. Often my husband came home from work and told me he had persuaded a few more people to vote for Newby. I kept campaign cards in our van and passed them out at every possible opportunity. Numerous volunteers met at the polls daily to pass out voter guides that highlighted Newby’s name. The prayers and actions of devoted volunteers helped Justice Newby to accomplish what looked impossible to many!
You can watch the ceremony in the video below. It is well worth watching. We had many ordinary heroes who fought the good fight of faith in order to get Justice Newby re-elected. We knew how crucial it was to the future of NC to get a man of godly character, courage and consistency like Paul Newby in our highest state court. I thank God for the victory! I hope this post will inspire you to keep on fighting for what is noble and right, no matter what the odds are!
